Are employers missing out on untapped talent?
A new report has warned that UK employers are failing to make the most of the talent on offer in the UK.
According to the Hay Career Outlook Survey, a sizeable proportion of UK workers are being trapped in certain business environments, purely because would-be employers lack the faith in their ability to cross barriers.
The survey confirmed that employers feel it is necessary that prospective employees boast a certain degree of experience in the sector in which people are hoping to move.
And so if they do not have this experience, they usually do not bother taking their application further.
Some 38 per cent of public sector employers, for example, said that previous public sector experience is important.
In the private sector, by contrast, more than half (51 per cent) said this was the case.
Charles Logan, director at Hays, commented: “These findings highlight that workers believe they cannot move between sectors and that employers aren’t always able to understand or give credence to transferable skills.
“By over-emphasising the value of previous same-sector experience, employers could be missing out on talented people and motivated workers.”
